Top 4 Things To Do Lakeside at Lake Mead

Top 4 Things To Do Lakeside at Lake Mead

Just a few miles away from some of the most luxurious homes in Henderson, Nevada, formed by Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, Lake Mead has become one of the most popular recreational reservoirs in the United States. Located just 24 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip and just 19 miles from Henderson, Lake Mead is a fun place for locals and visitors to enjoy the cool blue water and sunshine.

Lake Mead is an incredibly fun experience where you can view the spectacular desert landscape surrounded by mountains, contrasted with vibrant lake waters. You can swim, boat, hike, bike, camp, or fish at Lake Mead. With more than 750 miles of shoreline,  it’s like a year-round playground that spans across 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, and valleys. Here are our top things to do at Lake Mead.

1. Boating & Water Sports

Lake Mead has several points of interest, and water sports are among the most popular. Black Canyon is one of the newest water trails. You can kayak, canoe, or even raft your way through the canyon.

Boating is another popular activity, whether you are tubing the waves, water skiing, or relaxing on a family yacht.  When boating on Lake Mead, enjoy the exciting open waters or relax in a private cove. Discovering the many marinas is another adventure when navigating the vast waterways.

2. Fishing

Fishing is another favorite activity at Lake Mead. With more than 290 square miles of water, there are plenty of spots for fishing.

Lake Mead has become famous for its striped bass. Other popular fish include rainbow trout, catfish, sunfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and crappie. Rainbow Trout are routinely released near Willow Beach every Friday.

3. Swimming

Whether you are enjoying a day on the beach, a boat, or prefer to disappear into a cove, there are many places to swim in the bright blue waters of Lake Mead.

While there are no lifeguards in the park, swimmers are encouraged to always wear a life jacket. Distances are deceiving, and most coves are too large to swim across. So it’s important to know your limits while enjoying a swim at Lake Mead.

4. Hiking & Biking Trails

Covered with sandy shores with a mix of views of Black Canyon, hiking at Lake Mead is a fabulous sight to see. Traveling across open expansive rock formations, there are various trails to explore. Perhaps the best way to explore this diverse landscape is on foot or on wheels.

The best season to enjoy the trails is mid-September through late March when temperatures are cooler. However, ranger-guided hikes are offered year-round. The surrounding canyons feature fascinating caves for exploring, along with several hot springs tucked away on various trails.

Enjoying Lake Mead Year-Round

If you'd like to enjoy Lake Mead year-round, there are many luxury communities nearby. Just 14 miles away, you’ll find luxury amenities and beautiful homes at Lake Las Vegas. The inspired desert modern custom home community of Ascaya, along with McDonald Highlands, is just 28 miles away. Both luxury communities feature custom home designs with expansive views of both the city and the surrounding mountains.
